PACK 918 AT THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA

Cub Scout Pack 918 Earns Highest Archdiocesan Award
Cub Scout Pack 918, sponsored by St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cottleville, was awarded three distinguished unit awards by Bishop Robert Herman at the Cathedral Basilica Saint Louis on Scout Sunday, Feb. 8. The unit awards were a result of the efforts of 20 Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 918 who participated in individual religious emblems program.
The unit awards were Outstanding Chaplains Award, Pope Paul Vl National Catholic Quality Unit and Golden Bow Award. The 2009 Outstanding Chaplains Award is the highest of three competitive archdiocesan quality unit award given annually across the archdiocese and the suffragan dioceses. The Chaplains Award recognizes Catholic-sponsored BSA units who best exemplify Scouting ideals. It is based upon training, leadership, service, spiritual growth, religious activities, vocational awareness, relationship with the parish and the local Catholic Committee on Scouting, as well as membership growth.
Pack 918 earned the Pope Paul VI National Catholic Quality Unit as an honor pack for the second year in a row from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. It is awarded based upon cooperation, development, and program by Catholic-chartered units above and beyond the BSA Centennial Award. It is based on how adult leadership responds to training, not only in Scouting lore, but training in Catholic Scouter development and religious counseling.
The unit was also awarded the Golden Bow Award for exemplary growth of a BSA Cub Scout pack. The Golden Bow is awarded to units and leadership working to grow a quality Scout program for all Catholic youth, as well as increase the availability of Scouting to Catholic youth.
Twelve Scouts were awarded the Parvuli Dei Catholic religious emblem. The Parvuli Dei (Children of God) program focuses on activities for young boys to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as member of their family, parish and community. The 12 Scouts, all students of St. Joseph Cottleville School, are Luke Carey, Robbie Frei, Jack Haarmann, Matt Kinnunen, Adam Kohlschreiber, Brian Kruse, Luke Lalumandier, Nicholas Mollett, Matt Stovall, Brian Sziezak, Joseph Wolf and Daniel Zack.
Additionally, eight students of St. Joseph and Cub Scouts in Pack 918, received the Light of Christ emblem. This is an individual scout award for Catholic registered Wolf scouts with the purpose to help the boy develop a personal relationship with Jesus. The eight scouts are Jacob Albrecht, Jack Barger, Grant Deeken, Nicholas Cummings, Chris Herman, Mitchell Kinnunen, Nicholas Prainito and Tim Sallwasser.
The twenty Cub Scouts of Pack 918 received their awards on Scout Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica Saint Louis, and will also be recognized at their home parish on Saturday, March 7, following the 8 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Cottleville.
