DISTRICT DINNER
A memorable time was had by all. On Friday, January 22, the Cherokee District Dinner was held at the Morehouse Elementary School Gymnasium. Scott Crumpecker of Troop 41 in Sikeston served as master of ceremonies for a crowd of 45 people.
Myron Lofton, Field Services director of the Greater St. Louis Area Council, provided the council report and formally introduced Carmel Dare as the new district executive. Vern Griffith, district chairman, provided the group with the district shakedown and honored several individuals with awards.
The District Award of merit was presented to two individuals this year: LaRhonda Muller from Portageville and Melissa Hahs from from Benton. Both individuals were very deserving and we expect to hear more about the great things that they will be involved in!
Jim Starks of Sikeston received the Leaving a Legacy Award for his devotion and tenure to the district. Thanks for everything you do!
I forgot to mention a special thanks to David Elsey, of Troop 41 in Sikeston. He made the unit recognition plaques that were presented.
I want to encourage those who did not attend to try to make plans to attend the event next year. We are excited about the possibilities that the district has in the future and wish to share the accomplishments with everyone involved.
Finally, if you have some comments or feedback about anything in regards to the evening, please let me know. I would like to improve on things next year! I have received some and if you are worried about hurting my feelings; don’t, remember I have thick skin. You can always provide comments through others if you like too.
Thanks to all of you for being a part of a boy’s life!
-- Scott Crumpecker

SCOUTING FOR FOOD
An 11% increase in 2009 over 2008! Thanks to you and your Scouts, we collected 32,337 cans of food for the needy in our area.
Here is where we saw the largest increases:
Benton-Pack 36 and Troop 25 81% increase 2900 cans
East Prairie-Troop 323 48% increase 890 cans
Charleston-Pack 33 39% increase 3200 cans

SCOUTQUEST 100
Mark your calendar for June 4-6! Forest Park is the place to be for the council-wide camporee! We hope that this event will be the second largest Scouting event in America during our centennial year, second only to the 2010 National Jamboree.
This year's Tiger Cubs and Wolves are invited for the day on Saturday. This year's Bears will graduate by then and be able to join your Webelos in camping the entire weekend. Boy Scout troops, Venture crews and Explorer posts will all be camping.
Many of the venues in the park will be open with special programs. Highlight activities are planned for each age group. A huge campfire show on Art Hill will be on Saturday night.

Plan on attending now!
Unit kits will be passed out at February Roundtable.

NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE AT THE DEPOT MUSEUM
Not only are they hosting our Centennial Display, the good people at The Depot have announced that they are having a display of and about Native American cultures. This goes far beyond the "feathers and arrowheads" displays you might be accustomed to seeing. This is a great opportunity for a Cub Scout den activity or for Boy Scouts to work on merit badges. Contact Museum Director Mike Marsh at 573-481-9967 for more details.
SCOUT-O-RAMA & PINEWOOD DERBY
Mark your calendars now for Saturday, March 13. The Scout-O-Rama and Pinewood Derby will be held at Rone Hall in Portageville. David and Paula Powers are our chairmen. We will have more details at Roundtable in coming months.

DISTRICT COMMITTEE AND COMMISSIONER MEETINGS
Our district committee and commissioner meetings are held jointly on the third Monday of every month. The commissioner's meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the committee meeting at 7 p.m. The meetings are held at the First Methodist Church in Portageville. It is very important that everyone on the district committee and all of our unit commissioners attend these meetings so that we can make the best decision to help our district grow stronger.
Next meeting: Monday, Jan. 11
We will follow-up on our battle plan and manpower prospecting.
A Sikeston/Northern car pool leaves from the Cheer's parking lot at 5:45 p.m.
For more information, contact District Chairman Vern Griffith at 573-380-7053 or District Commissioner Bill Gremard at 573-576-5764.

|
The Cherokee District is proud to report that Jim Starks (jstarks3@att.net) has agreed to be the Cherokee District centennial chairman. There are several key sub-chairmanships to be recruited soon. |
The Cherokee District Centennial Event is a two-month long display, January through February 2010, at The Depot Museum in Sikeston. The time is now to go through closets, garages and attics to find those vintage books, patches and uniforms to display. Spaces will be available for individual units to tell their own stories.
Each and every unit is encouraged to find a special way to celebrate this milestone in their own communities as well. Watch here for more details.

Please remember that there are a lot of great training opportunities on-line. Click on the "Training" tab on the left-hand side of this page to view your choices.
