POPCORN
For many packs, troops and crews, fundraising can consume as much time as running a solid program. As this year's Pathfinder District Popcorn Chairman, I want to share a few thoughts with you based on our pack's experience. We have tried numerous fundraisers (pretzels, auction, discount coupons with local merchants), but the one that gets the kids involved the most is popcorn sales. We choose the prize option because that helps those kids who chose not to sell see what the sellers get.
Our first year, approximately one-fifth of the boys sold popcorn (a couple of den leaders decided not to give the packets to the boys). We made about two-fifths of our annual fundraising goal. Our second year, about one-third of the boys sold (we handed the packets out to all boys at a well-attended pack meeting). We made about three-fifths of our annual fundraising goal. Speaking as the popcorn chair for the pack, I found the work was not extremely challenging or time-consuming (much of what you need is online), and the money came in much faster than the auction money (we are four months out and still chasing a person or two).
Scouting is about the boys. The popcorn fundraiser -- if the parents can step back -- lets the boy make sales, add up the total charge, collect the money when delivering the product and double check that the money he has collected is the amount owed the pack. As popcorn chair of the pack, I had an opportunity to meet the committed Scouts and parents of the pack, which broadened the opportunities to find volunteers for the pack. When we are running program, we can be overwhelmed so that meeting and talking with parents can be strained. But when we are celebrating the success of the boys, we can generate good will.
I hope your pack or troop will continue with popcorn if you have sold in the past, and that you will think about it as an option to try since it benefits the boys, the council and the BSA, all at once.

WE WANT YOU!! -- UNIT COMMISSIONERS
Unit commissioners, also known as UCs, are a vital part of a units success. Former and current Scout leaders and volunteers make the best UCs. A UC helps his or her assigned units/during the recharter process, School Night and committee meetings, and makes regular visits to the unit to ensure its success. A UC is assigned one to three units, depending on the UC's availability.
If you are interested in becoming a UC, please contact one of your district executives or District Commissioner Steve Smith. UC meetings are the second Monday of the every month 7 p.m., at Clayton High School, No. 2 Mark Twain Circle, in the library.
