Will you be prepared for an emergency? What about your Scouts? The Greater St. Louis Area Council and the American Red Cross would like to make sure you can answer yes to both of these questions.
The Greater St. Louis Area Council offers training for Adult Leaders in the spring and fall that will help adult leaders be prepared for anything from a minor burn to a serious medical emergency.
Why do I need these training courses?
- First Aid training is beneficial not only in your Scout troop but in your day to day life. Whether you are on a troop hike, at a child's sporting event, at the office or just at home, knowing how to calmly handle everything from cuts and scrapes to posionings can help save a life.
- CPR training helps you recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults (persons over 8 years of age). You will learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Wilderness First Aid courses are designed to meet the needs of those who go into areas that are beyond the reach of urban EMS. This course has a ceritfication process. It is approximatley 16 hours of training for situations when help is delayed. This course is offered through the Red Cross. It will be required for those units taking a trek to the Philmont Scout Reservation in 2008 and beyond and is recommended for back country camping, hiking, canoeing, or other high adventure. Courses will be offered to the trek leaders of those courses beginning this spring. Please check this website for details later this spring.
Training your Scouts
- Red Card training is a requirement for 9 different merit badges including two Eagle required, Swimming and Lifesaving. Red Card is not a certification but is intended to familiarize your scout with CPR. Since a Red Card is not a certification it can be taught by anyone in a medical field. If you don't already know, ask around. Is there a parent who is a doctor, nurse, EMT, firefighter, First Responder or any certified CPR instructor? Any of these people are able to teach a Red Card course.
If you would like to conduct a CPR certification you will need a certified instruction. If you plan to conduct CPR certification or Red Card training you will need CPR mannequins. The Greater St. Louis Area Council has CPR mannequins available for your use. To use the dummies, there is a $20 deposit for each dummy used. The cost is $5 per dummy plus the cost of any other supplies that you will need for the training. The council office has 10 mannequins available to certified instructors only and a reservation must be made at least a week before you plan to pick them up.
