Tiger Cub Scout Receives Heroism Award

Courageous Tiger Cub Joseph Pizzella was awarded the Heroism Award at the Greater St. Louis Area Council's Annual Recognition and Awards Dinner on May 24, 2004, for saving 2-year-old Sawyer Ludwig from drowning.  The Heroism Medal is awarded to those who have demonstrated heroism and skill saving or attempting to save a life or in averting serious injury with minimum risk to self.

Joe, 7, was enjoying the day at RiverChase Pool in Fenton, Mo., with his family in July 2003 when his quick actions led to the rescue of Sawyer Ludwig.  Joe was wading through the wave pool when he saw Sawyer struggling in the water.  Sawyer had wandered too far from the shallow end of the pool and was being pulled farther into the deep water by the pool's current.  Joe swam over, reached out and pulled the boy up and held him above the water until the boy's mother, Taylor Ludwig, could reach them.  Sawyer was startled by the incident but not injured.  Sawyer's mom credits Joe with saving the life of her son.  Cindy Pizzella, Joe's mom, who also witnessed the incident, is proud of his quick assessment of the situation and his lifesaving actions.

Joe's heroic actions were also recognized by Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock.  Mayor Hancock awarded Joe a plaque and proclaimed Aug. 18 Joe Pizzella Day.
