ST. LOUIS--The Boy Scouts of America will introduce the Chess merit badge during events on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis. The event is free and open to the public. All Scouts, parents and leaders are encouraged to attend and wear uniforms.
NASA Astronaut and Eagle Scout Greg Chamitoff, who played chess aboard the space shuttle, will make a special presentation. A chess board will be painted on the street outside of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center, and a match will be played with Scouts as the chess pieces.
Chamitoff will sign autographs, and tours of the Chess Club and the new World Chess Hall of Fame will take place from 2 to 3 p.m.
Jeanne Sinquefield, Ph.D., and her husband, Rex Sinquefield, were instrumental in developing the Chess Club and Scholastic Center as well as the merit badge. Mrs. Sinquefield is the first counselor for Chess merit badge and a member of the executive board of the Great Rivers Council, with headquarters in Columbia, Mo. She will present the first merit badges earned as part of the event.
