ST. LOUIS—Hundreds of Boy
Scouts will finish packing on Sunday at Beaumont Scout Reservation before
traveling to the National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia.
The Greater St. Louis Area Council’s contingent will
conclude their “shakedown” campout at Beaumont by making sure they packed all
tents, patrol and personal gear for the 10-day event. (A “shakedown” is the process of unpacking
all items, checking to make sure you everything that’s required, and then
repacking.) All gear will be loaded on a
tractor-trailer, provided by the Hussmann
Corporation. The Scouts will rendezvous
with their equipment on Monday, July 26, before entering Fort A.P. Hill and
setting up camp.
Six troops—the largest
contingent in several decades—from the council will attend the event, which
will be the climax of the Boy Scouts of
America’s yearlong 100th
anniversary celebration. An
estimated 50,000 Scouts from throughout the United States will take part in hundreds of
activities, including rappelling, motocross, water sports, fishing and archery
during the 10-day event. Almost 100
adult volunteer leaders from throughout the council’s 26 counties in Missouri and 10 in southern Illinois will serve as staff members at
the Jamboree. A total of 880 troops will
be assisted by more than 8,000 adult volunteer staff members from throughout
the United States.
The council’s contingent will
depart on six buses on Thursday, July 22, and tour the Washington, D.C., area before the Jamboree. They will visit Arlington National Cemetery on Friday and Williamsburg, Va., on Saturday. After visiting Busch Gardens theme park on Sunday, they are
scheduled to arrive at the Jamboree at 10 a.m. on Monday. Activities will run through Wednesday,
Aug. 4, 2010.
Council leadership began
planning the trip more than two years ago. The contingent’s troops conducted several meetings during the last few
months and camped together in June during ScoutQuest 100, a council-wide
camporee that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the BSA, in Forest Park.
On Saturday, July 31, the
general public will be able to take part in a nationwide broadcast of the National
Jamboree’s closing stage show. “A
Shining Light Across America,” will be available via satellite and webcast at 7 p.m. CDT and conclude at approximately 9:30
p.m. (Anyone with a high-speed Internet connection
can tune in at www.ustream.tv/shininglight or on the Shining Light section
of the BSA’s Facebook page.)
