Gardening Merit Badge
Hosted by
Summer Winds Nursery
And led by
Karin Foster – Master Gardener
What do worms, playing in the mud, and salsa have in common? Have you ever wondered how a whole flower or vegetable can fit into a tiny seed? Are there really ‘good’ bugs and ‘bad’ bugs? The answer to all these questions can be found by attending the Gardening Merit Badge Skill Center.
Summer Winds Nursery will sponsor a Gardening Merit Badge Skill Center, led by Master Gardener Karin Foster, for Boy Scouts interested in working towards their Gardening Merit Badge.
The program will be offered on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 1:00PM to 4:30PM (*) at Summer Winds Nursery, located in Ellisville at 54 Clarkson Road near the intersection of Manchester Road.
Scouts should wear their Class A uniform The program fee for the Gardening Merit Badge Skill Center is $15 if you’re doing the worm farm (Requirement #6b), or $5 if you are planning to complete one of the other options for Requirement #6 on your own outside of the Skill Center.
Scouts should bring a snack with drink (bottled water will be provided, no food service is available), their Gardening Merit Badge book, and a pencil. Dress for the weather, as we will be outside (under cover) for the program.
Prerequisites For The Class:
1. Contact a Gardening Merit Badge counselor before April 27th, and bring your signed merit badge card with you – it is your admission ticket. The list of Gardening merit badge counselors is available at www.stlbsa.org under the “Scouts” pull down menu at the top of the page.
2. Read the Gardening Merit Badge book and bring it to the skill center. We will be completing Requirements 2, 4 and 5. We will discuss and provide guidance for starting and completing Requirements 1, 3 and 6b.
3. For Requirement #6, Scouts must choose 1 of 4 projects to complete. We will work on Option 6b: Building a worm compost bin.
4. (*) Boys wishing to work at home and complete Requirement #6 using another Option, should be picked up at 3:30PM, as we will only work on Option 6b during this skill center.
