2010 Beacon Award Recipients

Units who earned the Beacon Award in 2010 are listed below in alphanumeric order according to district, with pictures shown in random order. The council's public relations department will select photos for publication on the website and/or in the Duffle Bag from those submitted with the Beacon Award Application.

​Boone Trails

  • Pack 30 -- collected can goods at Jungerman Wal-Mart in St. Charles for local food pantries
  • Pack 376 -- created living flag memorial for deceased Winfield Marine’s family and community
  • Pack 856 -- Webelos participated in opening flag ceremony at Daniel Boone Elementary School for Veterans Day assembly
  • Pack 961 -- participated in Adopt the Road program to clean road in front of pack’s elementary school every other month; made three cedar benches for Hawthorn Elementary School’s outdoor classroom
  • Troop 853 -- completed TEEN CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training
  • Troop 976 -- put together display for February with old neckerchiefs, merit badge books and other older artifacts at American Legion Post 312
  • Troop 997 -- appeared on Fox 2 News morning show during interview with Eleanor Clark, author of "The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell"

Cherokee

  • Troop 41 -- retired old worn-out flags for Sikeston and surrounding area on Veterans Day

Egyptian

  • Pack 48 -- participated in Old King Coal Parade in West Frankfort with float theme of "100 years of Scouting"; participated in opening-day ceremony at Rent One Park; placed flags at graves of veterans at Denning Cemetery in observance of Memorial Day

Gravois Trail

  • Pack  25 -- partnered with school’s "Adopt a Family" program and made Christmas stockings
  • Pack  66 -- recognized Scouting by having "100 years of Scouting" on school marquee
  • Pack 116 -- participated in Scouting for Food as noted in St. Louis Review
  • Pack 143 -- walked in Veterans Day Parade and carried flags
  • Pack 661 -- performed beautification project at their sponsor school
  • Pack 726 -- partnered with Bethesda Southgate Senior Independent Living Facility to provide inter-generational experience for all
  • Pack 753 -- advertised pinewood derby on school’s marquee
  • Pack 826 -- displayed "Happy 100th Birthday BSA" message on school marquee 
  • Troop 580 -- with their families from Long Elementary School donated packs of diapers and contributed more than 80 hours of volunteer work at national headquarters of Nurses for Newborns Foundation in St. Louis
  • Troop 661 -- participated in parade
  • Troop 824 -- carried troop flag and U.S. flag in Veterans Day Para

Kaskaskia

  • District Committee -- Communications chairman Trina Thomas worked with units on story published in The Southern Illinoisan newspaper on 100th anniversary of Scouting
  • Pack, Troop & Crew 37 -- celebrated 100 years of Scouting at Scout Centennial Celebration at new church The View
  • Pack 41 -- delivered 76 homemade Christmas cards to two local residential care facilities, a nursing home and supported living center
  • Troop 66 -- recognized for 50 years of Scouting, along with past Scouts, at Court of Honor; followed by presentation at church service
  • Pack 128 -- picked up trash at Keyes City Park

New Horizons

  • Pack 569 -- participated in Veterans Day flag ceremony at River Bend Elementary School in Chesterfield
  • Pack 604 -- visited nursing home for Halloween party; in December adopted residents who are without family and bought Christmas presents; participated in sing-a-long with residents; passed out handmade cards and candy canes
  • Pack 621 -- Webelos of Den 10 presented the colors and led Pledge of Allegiance at city council meeting in Ballwin
  • Troop 303 -- sponsored CPR training class in which Kevin Ericson (father of Scout David Ericson) wanted to teach Scouts two lessons: be aware of your surroundings at all times, and importance of CPR training (Kevin had previously been at a meeting where he assisted an elderly woman who began choking on her food.)
  • Troop 627 -- put up shelves in storage shed and did landscaping and fix-up jobs at home of Mike Treese, who has ALS
  • Troop 680 -- Striking Scorpion patrol performed opening flag ceremony at Veterans Day program at Rockwood Summit High School

North Star

  • Pack 797 -- held car wash to raise money for their chartered organization and pack;  also used event to promote signing up at School Night for Scouting
  • Troop 717 -- participated in Thanksgiving Parade
  • Troop 940 -- performed flag-raising ceremony on Veterans Day at St. Angela Merici Elementary School
Osage
  • Pack 811 -- held car-wash fundraiser at Modern Auto Car Dealership in Washington to help soldier wounded in Afghanistan
Ozark Trailblazers
  • Pack 563 -- wrote short stories about what Scouting means to them
Pathfinder
  • Pack 39 -- spent rainy afternoon cleaning up trash and debris in Royal Oaks Park in Warson Woods
  • Pack & Troop 284 -- visited Mary Ryder Home for Women; performed various Christmas carols and served sugar-free punch and cookies to residents and staff
  • Troop 48 -- planted trees on church grounds to commemorate 100th anniversary of Scouting
Sioux
  • Pack 69 -- picked up 74 bags of trash for their 2-mile Adopt-A-Highway program in Doniphan
Thunderbird
  • Pack 214 -- nominated Galen Selligman for "Do the Right Thing" award. While playing outside, Galen thought he saw a real handgun; he ran home and told his mother, who called police; they determined the gun was real with the safety off.
  • Troop 115 -- held flag collection drive after all masses on Independence Day at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church
